Human rights defender Lev Ponomarev is arrested
December 10, 2018 in Stockholm near the Russian Embassy, Vayfond Association held a picketing in support of political prisoners in Russia.
77-year-old human rights activist Lev Ponomarev is arrested in Russia. He is sentenced for 25 days for his repost from well-known mass-media about the upcoming rally “For your and our Children.” The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the repost was a call to an unauthorized rally.
This publication did not contain any calls, it was for informational purposes only. He has recently suffered a heart attack, and, of course, imprisonment in a Russian jail can worsen his health.
In Russia, human rights defenders who do not keep silent about the crimes of the Russian authorities and structures are being persecuted. Lev Ponomarev’s case is not the first one.
We know the names of murdered human rights defenders like Anna Politkovskaya and Natalia Estemirova. The list of people assassinated for political reasons is very long, and this list continues to grow.
If human rights defenders are not killed, then the authorities are trying to put them in prison on any grounds. Criminal cases are fabricated against them, they are often charged for the crimes that harm their reputation. Thus, already two representatives of the largest Russian human rights organization Memorial were accused of pedophilia, authorities planted drugs to the third representative and now are taking attempts to try him for possession of narcotic substance. Each time FSB comes up with new methods of fighting movements that do not support the dictatorial regime in Russia.
The protection of human rights defenders anywhere in the world is our common problem and goal. If Russia does not stop the persecution of human rights organizations, democracy will die in Russia completely, and a multi-million country will be captured by dictators and bandits in power, as it has already happened in North Korea.
